Website rankings play a key role in website traffic. Some companies opt to pay for primary placement in search engine results. Others use search engine optimization (SEO) strategies to improve their rankings.

Great marketing strategies utilize keywords, backlinks, and website efficiency to improve a website's ranking in search engine results. It roots in several components: on-page, off-page, and technical SEO.

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO describes the content and keywords included on a webpage. Keywords that are searched often are the key to improving a website's search engine results pages (SERPs) ranking. Embedding keywords into titles, headings, and subheadings help Google to index a website as more organically relevant.

Duplicate content, another type of on-page SEO, has a negative effect on website rankings. Failing to create your own content has a negative impact on rankings. While some businesses simply don't duplicate content from other websites, others have their website code written so that search engines crawl the pages of their website with duplicate content. Either way, it is important to address any issues of duplicate content so as not to harm your website rankings.

While on-page SEO is discussed most often, it is neither the only, nor the most important part of an SEO strategy.

Off-Page SEO

Backlinks are the primary source for off-page SEO. A backlink is a hyperlink to a page of your website that consumers click from a different website. You may or may not have a relationship with the company or person who runs that website.

Businesses who wish to increase their backlink impressions engage in a practice called link building, wherein businesses actively pursue the placement of their backlinks on other websites. This practice is supported through networking with people who own websites, whether it be for their business or a blog. You can send emails to bloggers and business owners to share the latest information or blog from your website. If they like it and it's relevant to their website, they may choose to share it. These actions can lead to increased website traffic for all parties involved.

Link building strategies can be difficult to develop and time consuming to execute, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Technical SEO

The performance of your website matters just as much, if not more than the content you post about. Technical search engine optimization measures how quickly your website loads, as well as how the code is written. Any competent SEO consultant will insist on a technical component to your SEO strategy.

There's no fixed number. Competitive keywords might require hundreds of authoritative links, while low-competition local terms can rank with just a handful of quality links. Match or exceed what ranking competitors have.
Good backlinks come from authoritative, relevant sites with real traffic and editorial standards. Bad backlinks come from spam directories, link farms, or paid networks — these can trigger Google penalties.
Yes. Google has confirmed that links remain one of the top ranking factors. The key change is that relevance and quality now matter far more than raw quantity.
Digital PR campaigns, guest posting on industry publications, resource-page outreach, broken-link building, and being featured in relevant roundups are all Google-compliant and durable tactics.
